Bing Ads is an advertising platform used to display ads on the Bing network including bing.com, yahoo.com, and aol.com. Smaller affiliates like duckduckgo.com and slickdeals.net also fall under this umbrella.

Ads show up on Bing when a visitor searches just as they would on any other search engine. The top and sides of the page are premium real estate, and you want to be sure people notice you first by making your ads relevant.

How Bing Advertising Works

Bing shows ads relevant to a visitor’s search based on the terms used. Searching for “hardware store Kansas City” will return ads for hardware stores in Kansas City. Yes, that’s quite obvious. However, you may not know that whenever someone conducts a search, Bing gives ad placement to the highest bidder. Just because you have an ad on Bing, doesn’t mean people will see it.

Bing makes money off of the ads businesses place, so if you outbid your competition, your ad is more likely to appear. However, Bing only gets paid when someone clicks an ad. That’s because you only pay Bing when someone clicks on your ad.

This is why relevancy matters. If you operate a hardware store in Chicago, your ad will never appear using the search terms above no matter how much you bid, because no one would ever click on it. They need hardware stores in Kansas City, not Chicago. Showing irrelevant ads profits no one.

On your end of the ad, make sure when a visitor clicks your ad, it sends them where they expect to go. If your ad promotes drills, send the clicker to the drill page of your hardware store website, not the page with pipe fittings.

Advantages of Bing

Bing has a host of advantages that are similar to other search engines. Using proper keywords, you get your business in front of people when they need it, increasing your conversion rate. You only pay if your ad works, so you don’t spend money on useless advertising, and you’re less likely to exceed your budget by placing bids for the maximum you’re willing to pay.

You can also track your engagements on a dashboard, showing you how many people saw your ad, how many times they clicked, and how much you paid for each click, giving you the ability to segment your future ads based on what worked and what didn’t.

While Bing doesn’t have the same volume as Google, this proves to be beneficial. Fewer businesses advertise on Bing, meaning less competition for you, better ad positioning, lower cost per click, and higher quality conversions.

Cost of Bing

A pay per click model determines how much advertisers pay for ads. You only pay when someone clicks your ad, but how much you pay depends on how much you bid. You pay different amounts based on keywords. Niche keywords in small communities can cost less than .20 while popular keywords in big markets cost more than $20.

Bing’s keyword planner suggests bids for your ads, so you have an idea of how much you need to bid for your ad to appear in someone’s search terms. You choose how much you are willing to pay based on how much you stand to profit from acquiring conversions. $20 is worthwhile if a new customer means $500 or more to your business.

Factors to Consider

Switching to Bing from Google doesn’t mean you’ll lose your previous campaigns. When you sign up for a Bing account, you have the option to import these from Google AdWords. You can then use them to run similar campaigns and benchmark which service is better for your business.

Diligent keyword research tells you which terms have high volumes and low competition. Bid on keywords with purchasing intent. If someone searches for “best toilets to buy,” it’s likely they plan to buy one soon. If they search for “best art gallery near me,” you don’t want your hardware store ad to appear. That is unless you also offer hardware services.

After selecting targeted keywords based on your product, service, or location, you can also choose your match type. This allows you to select how closely you want your keyword to match the user’s search when your ad appears. Broad matches will look for searches containing synonyms of your keyword, whereas exact matches will only show up when someone searches for that exact keyword or phrase. Broad matches have the potential to appear on searches that aren’t relevant to your business, so you may have to narrow your match type over time after some careful study.

After several months, you should review and optimize your ad to improve future results. You have visibility to keyword impressions so you can refine and change as needed. Remember to remove negative keywords from your campaign.

Bing has a variety of targeting options you can use after you evaluate your initial campaign. You can run A/B tests, increase your visibility on weekends where you see more traffic, and bid higher on demographics like age or gender.

The best part about a list is that they don’t require much writing talent. You can easily compile a list of the 10 best marketing books or the 5 best affiliate programs in only a few minutes. Promotion can be done by including an affiliate or referral link for the last product on the list.

Why they work

All three of these can drive a significant amount of traffic to your site. They do this because they’re exceedingly useful pieces of content. Reviews, tutorials, and lists of suggestions actually offer something of real value to your readers.

If your visitors find the information to be helpful and informative, they will likely share it with other people they know. When your blog posts are shared on other websites, you’re essentially getting free promotion.

How Our Brains Work Against Us

A lot of people hoping to make money online are limited to working at it just a few hours per day or less. If you’re working a day job and are frustrated that you can’t spend more time becoming financially free, I have some good news for you.

Do you know what’s even more effective than having more time to work? Getting as much as you possibly can out of the time you do have available.

The reason is that if you’re not focused and effective during a short period of time, then having all day would just mean more wasted time. As a mentor of mine once said, “If you can’t make money in your spare time, you can’t make money full-time.”

So, here are 5 proven tips I want to share, based on what modern neuroscience has shown (not motivational fluff), that will help you to get even closer to your income goals in less time.

How Our Brains Work Against Us

There’s a meme floating around called “Scumbag Brain” that jokes about how the human brain works against us sometimes instead of doing what we want it to. For example…It’s easy to get motivated, but hard to stay disciplined.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that gritting your teeth and relying on willpower alone is not enough.

Think of the last time you were on an exercise program that did not last. You went to the gym religiously for several weeks…until you caught a cold, or missed a day. Then, it was back to your old habits and behavior again—not to mention feelings of guilt and self-blame (which make it even harder to bounce back).

The key is to avoid self-criticism by understanding how your mind works. We all get lazy or have setbacks. The key is to get back on track again quickly when (not if) it happens.

Schedule 90-120 Minute Time Blocks

The easiest way to get something done is to set a specific time and place to do it, and then show up when the time comes. Otherwise, your goals and plans are not concrete enough, and you can fall into the procrastination trap.

It’s also a fact that people can only stay focused and productive for 90 to 120 minutes at a time, before we need a rest or diversion. It’s impossible to stay ultra-productive all the time. Don’t even bother trying.

Instead, schedule blocks of time when you’ll be doing nothing but working, and when it’s over, STOP. Take a 15-20 minute break, or wrap it up for the day.

Also, treat your scheduled commitment to yourself as seriously as you would your job. Isn’t it just as important?

Prioritize Your Top 5 Items

It helps to list the top 5 tasks to accomplish each day, preferably the night before. Then, when the time comes to work, work on one thing at a time, starting with the most important action item of the day. When it’s finished, move on to item #2, and so on, until done. Do NOT try to do two things at once! Multi-tasking is a myth and a joke.

It gives people the illusion that they are getting more done, but in reality you lose concentration while switching back and forth between items because it takes time for the mind to get caught up again.

Create an Environment for Focused Work

Your performance is affected the environment you’re in and the tools available to you, positively or negatively. Give your body and mind what they need to perform by setting up your workspace for success.

Before you start, clear out the clutter and remove any potential distractions. Have only one window open on your computer. Get away from email, phone, and social media until your work block is over. You can schedule a separate session for phone calls and email.

I have also found that upbeat music helps me move more quickly, as long as it’s not too distracting (and no vocals—otherwise my mind pays attention to the lyrics).

Take a Fun Break!

Lastly, don’t forget to give yourself the rest you need, in order to have the concentration reserves you need to fuel your work.

So make a point to schedule periods each day for breaks, leisure, and fun as well as working on your business. It’s just as important if you want to be consistent in the long run!

Meet The Masters: Henry Ossawa Tanner

Henry Ossawa Tanner was our first African-American distinguished painter to gain international recognition. Tanner was born on June 21, 1859, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Benjamin Tucker and Sarah Miller Tanner. His father was an educated man and later would become a bishop of the African Methodist Episcopalian Church. His mother manage to escape the horrors of slavery by means of the Underground Railroad. In a time in America when slavery was still the norm, young Tanner was bitten by the art bug at the age of 13 by his fascination with thePhiladelphia art galleries. However, wanting to be an artist was just unheard of, being it was hard enough just being African-Amercian in a racialist society.

Despite any setbacks, his mind was made up to become an artist. At the age of twenty-one, he enrolled in the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. There he was able to study under a group of master professors. Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins would become one of Tanner’s greatest early influences. Thomas Eakins was a Pennsylvania native of English and Dutch descent that was an alumni and now a professor of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Eakins was a Realist style painter that was heavily influenced by his time in Paris under the instruction of French Masters Jean-Leon Gerome and Leon Bonnat. Between the two masters, they have a super list of pupils: Charles Sprague Pearce, George Bridgman, Mary Cassatt, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, John Singer Sargent, Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Peel, Edvard Munch, Pierre Emmanuel Damoye and Walter Gay to name a few.

This steeped rich art history was being imprinted on the mind of young Tanner. Eakins suggested that Tanner go to France to farther his art career. When Tanner arrived in France there were a lot of artistic circles to choose from. Gustave Moreau had become the professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, Fauvist Henri Matisse was studying at the Académie Julian and became a student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Vincent van Gogh had just passed away and within six weeks his brother Theo van Gogh would organize his last exhibition and would pass away barely half a year later, Post Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin creates a copy of Olympia by Édouard Manet and French Impressionist Claude Monet creates his Haystacks series. Tanner wasting no time enrolled in the Académie Julian where he studied under Jean Paul Laurens and Jean Joseph Benjamin-Constant. At this time in his life, he would start to create some of the most important works depicting African-American subjects. A subject that many painters dabbled in but never committed to. Tanner would take the style and run with it creating works like the Thankful Poor, Spinning by Firelight, Bois d’Amour, The Bagpipe Lesson and The Bagpipe Player. He would first draw a series of studies sometimes from magazines like Harper’s Young People magazine, which he used to create The Banjo Lesson painting. Around 1895 Tanner painted Daniel in the Lion’s Den, which earned him an honorable mention in the Paris Salon. He was now going down a different path, the road of religious paintings and landscapes. The more he painted, the more the world noticed and rewarded him for it. He painted the Resurrection of Lazarus and it was purchased by the French government and exhibited at the Luxembourg Gallery, eventually it found a home in the Louvre collection. Henry Ossawa Tanner was now a fully international acclaimed artist in the eyes of the art world. The French called him Monsieur Tanner and treated him with respect and as a follow contemporary whenever they saw or wrote about him, while back home in America they called him a negro artist. Tanner would spend the rest of his life in France painting award-winning and influential artworks and will be forever known as the first African American international acclaimed artist.

The master realist oil painter Henry Ossawa Tanner died in Paris, France in 1937 leaving behind somewhere around 159 master artwork in private and museums collections all over the world as well as the spark of the African-Amercian style (later called Black Art) for many African-Amercian artists to adopt.

Art collecting can be called an art onto its self, and I should say there is no right way to buy art! Art is a personal thing and you should always buy what you fall in love with or what excites you. Yes, there are many styles, names, trends and some art goes up faster than others. Art can be very trendy and people may be talking about this artist more than that one. But somewhere between fine wine and investments is where you can find fine art.

Art As An Investment

The basics of art as an investment is that you purchase a piece of art that you’re passionate about and in time the artist, gallery, or art house start selling that artist’s artwork for more than what you paid for it. Voila! you now have equity in your piece of art, keeping in mind there are many factors to how fast the equity grows and demand for that particular artist. A friend of mine sometimes uses her collection as currency, trading artworks for other things she needs. She has used this method to buy cars, pay bills and dinner. The real value in art is finding other people that are as passionate about that artist as you are. Because of this, if you own the right pieces of art it can be leveraged by sharing it with the world. Corporations, museums and traveling exhibitions lease these kinds of artworks all the time which provide income for the owners. But If you want a guarantee on your art buying… then I suggest you buy art for love, you’ll always get your value out of it.

Do Your Research

Spend some time learning about the artwork and the artist because trends and popularity can both be misleading. Whenever possible, buy art in person and even better meet with the artist. Ask them about the series if it is in one, ask what is the size of it and if they plan on continuing the series. At some point, you may plan to buy another artwork and it would be good to know if there will be more in that style. If you have the pleasure of talking to the artist, try to find out if they do art fulltime, where they will be showing next and what projects are coming up next. A lot of artists do studio sales, that help control their inventory, sale one-off pieces, and earn them additional income. Knowing when these artists are having their studio sales can normally save you a lot of cash, plus you get to hang-out in the studio. Research can be a collector’s best friend.

Collect with a Focus

This is a hard one for new collectors because they have not set any parameters yet. You do not need to limit yourself to just one type of work. Focus on a style or two or three styles, this will really help you build a great collection. This type of collecting helps to make it easier for identifying the kinds of works you want to purchase.

Proper Title Transfer

Any reputable art dealer or gallery should provide you with things like the provenance, condition, artist information with signature, history and edition numbers.

Documentation Is King

As a collector, you need to have all the documentation for your collection. Because anyone that needs to evaluate your collection must have a very thorough understanding of all the pieces. From your very first artwork you purchase, start a list of all the works, descriptions, invoices of sale prices, the purchase dates, and subsequent appraisal prices. It’s a good practice and will save you so many headaches in the future.

One of the simplest ways to learn more about an artwork or an artist is to ask questions, have fun and happy collecting.

Journey Into Africa

The Thomas Collection is a journey into African culture and presented with an American artistic heritage view. I was moved to create the this body of work from the deep conversations with African historian Mr. Thomas. The talks I had with him about historical artifacts made a profound imprint on me and thrust me into creation mode. Africa is a big topic with a lot of parts and I quickly found that I needed to reach out to different people and parts of Africa to widen my scope.

I must say, I have never been moved as much about African art as when I learned about different part of the country that was new to me.

This body of work is representational and my vision of some the documents, artifacts, and conversions that I was introduced to. After many days in the studio, a rich vibrant collection of masks were created and Thomas Collection us assembled. These masks are not intended to represent a particular people but the culture from country to country.
