About The Artwork

This is one of those legendary jazz men that I had to paint. Thelonious Monk was a giant in the jazz world but not as often thought about as some of the more common names. The interplay between the warm and cool colors of reds and blues makes this a very electrifying painting. I gave the great man a noble stance, and placed analogous colors all over his face while bringing a few warm dashs of excitement in his beard, mustache and glasses. This interplay worked well against the contemporary bold abstract background. I finished the painting off with a harmonizing calligraphy  monogram of his name, Monk.
